Why It’s Important To Show Self-Love

Having a solid sense of self-love is vital for our mental health and well being. When we hold ourselves in higher-esteem, we tend to naturally make better choices. These choices affect our physical health as well as mental. This is hard for parents, as we instinctually put everyone else before ourselves.

Self-love means being less critical of ourselves, and forgiving oneself for setbacks and uncontrollable circumstances. It also means being mindful of oneself and how you’re feeling and what your body is telling you. It’s creating (and sticking to) boundaries that do not serve our minds or bodies well.

This Valentine’s Day, you should take the opportunity to show yourself some self-love as well as those around you. Here are some things you can do to refill your proverbial cup.

 Self-Love Valentine’s Day Ideas

These are ideas we should all do for our self-love, regardless of it being Valentine’s Day. We never need a holiday to remind ourselves to love ourselves!

Write Yourself Love Letters

Write affirmations and sweet little notes to yourself. Remind yourself of the qualities, or traits, that you genuinely do love and enjoy that makeup who you are.

An affirmation journal is a great way to store these love notes, as it’s something tangible you can go back and read when you need a confidence boost!

Buy Yourself The Flowers & Chocolate

Don’t wait for anyone else to take the hint. if you want the flowers and the chocolate, buy them. Get exactly what you want! It doesn’t matter if you end up with duplicates anyway-the point is, you’re treating yourself.

Don’t like cut flowers? Buy a potted plant. Don’t like chocolate? Buy hard candies, or whatever your snacking habits enjoy! At a time we’re usually showering the ones we love with gifts, it’s not just ok to add yourself to the list; make yourself a priority! Even if it’s just a Starbucks run without bringing anything back for anyone-don’t feel guilty. You deserve this.

Meditate and allow yourself the down-time

Meditation is not just a form of self-care. It actually allows us to practice mindfulness, which can be extremely beneficial in times of stress, or when faced with a tough decision.

Give yourself time to truly reconnect with your inner-self, and meditate. Even for only a few minutes. Your headspace will be clearer, and it’s a great way to keep mindful. If you think meditation isn’t for you, remember that meditation isn’t much different than prayer. But, if you are one of faith, reading your Bible is also an excellent way to reconnect with yourself and your spirituality.

Do Nothing.

Be lazy! Spend some time doing absolutely nothing, other than the things you really want to do. Avoid chores and binge-watch tv, start that book you’ve been putting off. Do something that you want to do, even if it’s ultimately “unproductive.”

Your sanity and self-love will thank you for it!
