How Binge-Watching Television Is Really Self Care
It’s been a scary couple of months since the world went on self-quarantine. Self Care is now more important than ever to keep us sane. So we shouldn’t feel guilty for allowing ourselves to run a television marathon in our spare time.
Here is how binge-watching television actually does count as a form of self-care!

Let’s define self-care…
True “self-care” is defined as any activity that allows you to mentally recharge your batteries, destress, and repair your mental health.
This can be done a multitude of different ways. Yoga, meditation, manic-cleaning your house…whatever floats your boat! Self-care time doesn’t necessarily mean a super productive activity, either. You can be lazy and read your favorite book for the hundredth time. Play video games, or even, invest time in finally finishing seasons 1-12 of Grey’s Anatomy.
There is no real right or wrong way to self-care. As long as you feel replenished at the end of your session, any form of what you call “self-care” is fine. That also includes television! Also, were you aware of these top Netflix hacks?
Television has always been the great American pastime…
For Mom, it’s an exhausting long day of keeping the kids entertained while social distancing, running a household, (and for some) working from home. Who cares if your form of relaxation is to turn on some Criminal Minds once the kids are asleep? Did you know there is a new Dolly Parton anthology series on Netflix? The Sam Haskell video interview on Dolly is a must-see for any Parton fan, just saying!
People have tuned into their favorite television shows for almost 100 years as their source of entertainment. It’s not going anywhere anytime soon. And you shouldn’t feel guilty for doing it.
In previous decades, television was seen as a way the family could bond together, by watching their favorite programs. Now, with the new streaming on-demand video services, everyone can enjoy their own tv shows and movies with ease. This can be a blessing if your partner loves home renovation DIY’s, and you just wanna watch some Real Housewives after a tiresome day.

No one has said your time should only go to learning new skills or making money…
There has been a recent push in the last few years, that hobbies don’t exist and if something isn’t income-generating, it’s a waste of time. Nonsense!
If your form of self-care is learning a new language, or working on your side hustle, good! But that isn’t for everyone. If you’d rather wind-down, and replenish your proverbial ‘cup’ by vegging out in front of the tv, do it!
Self-care routines shouldn’t make you feel less fulfilled, more tired, or drained. Just because making her own bath bombs work for Karen down the street, doesn’t mean you’ll feel ready to take on the world after a bath. But if you enjoy watching Fixer Upper, and it inspires you to tackle that bathroom renovation project, enjoy it!
If you’re watching The Kardashians and you feel more relaxed and ready for the day, that’s awesome! You can watch whatever television program you want, and how you “self-care”, is your own way. No one else’s opinions matter.
Totally agree! These little things are some of the most important ways to self-care.
I’ve been watching She-ra on Netflix on a repeat with my daughter throughout the whole Lockdown. Only last week we decided to watch Disney+ movies. I really do enjoy She-ra though.
Definitely have to agree with you on this one!
We all have different version of self-care and binge watching my favorite shows has truly helped me in order to stay sane during this quarantine. Thank you for raising awareness!
It definitely makes sense that this is a good way to enjoy some self care. TV is a good escape for me after a long day!
