Is Wearing A Bra Bad For Your Health?

The first bra is a rite of passage for most women. But can wearing bras actually be bad for our health? Let’s look at the myths, and facts behind them…

Myth: Bras Cause Cancer!

We’ve all heard this one; don’t wear your bra to bed, you’ll get cancer. With breast cancer being a very legitimate fear (and sadly, reality), this myth has had many women nervous not only about sleeping in their undergarments, but even wearing them too long!

Stemming from a publication in 1995 that claimed that the wearing of underwire bras constricted the lymph system, and lead to cancer. There has been no sufficient scientific evidence of this!

However, with that being said – if you’re wearing your bra at night, make sure it’s comfortable! I always get terrible backaches when I forget to take the dang thing off. So if you’re not getting good rest, maybe consider ditching your brassiere?

Myth: Bras Keep Breasts Perky! (or Make Them Sag Worse!)

So for years, we were taught to wear that bra every day, or the girls would be at our knees by the time we were 30. I just turned 30 this year, and I’ve gone bra-less plenty of times. Guess what? They haven’t changed a bit in the last 15 years(except for those 2 years of breastfeeding).

One french researcher even went out on a limb as to say after conducting a 15 year study, women were able to have perkier breasts by not wearing a bra, period! Of course, his study was skewed by the fact he only looked at young women who had already worn bras for a period of time and admitted this topic needed more research.

So who was right? The women before us, or a weird french guy who was measuring a young girl’s boobs?

Neither. There’s not enough evidence to support that bras cause sagging, or perkiness.

Breasts change with time, and wearing a bra (or not wearing a bra) isn’t going to change anything! They’ll sag when they’re ready. It’s just a fact of life. Don’t fight it, embrace it!

Fact is…

Your bra isn’t dangerous to your health. It doesn’t cause sag, help perk, or give you cancer.

Your bra helps hide your nipples from inappropriate situations, makes you feel sexy, gives you support when your boobs are big – and that’s about it! You can either wear one – or not! Either way, you’re good, and there’s no health risk to worry about.

Your boobs won’t drop to the floor or turn cancerous, due to the Victoria’s Secret Bra you just bought. And if you decide to #freethenipple and go without, there’s no cause for alarm either.
