As a Mom, I tend to worry more about my family’s health than my own.

In The United States, about 1 in 4 people die every year from heart disease.

If you’re wondering what you can do to keep your family healthier, or yourself, read on to these 10 tips that will give you a healthier heart!

1: Stop Smoking

I don’t beat a dead horse by pointing out the dangers of smoking. But if you do smoke, you should seriously think about quitting.

One year after quitting smoking, your risk of heart attack is cut in half!

2: Exercise

You can keep a healthier heart by getting as much exercise as your schedule allows.

Moms (or even Dads for that matter)rarely have time for much for themselves, but there are ways you can sneak in some exercise time! Even if it’s just a few minutes a day, it’s better than nothing when it comes to your health!

3: Manage Your Diet Properly

Notice I say manage, not lose weight. Not everyone needs to lose weight, but every person should have control over a healthy diet.

Heart disease and high blood pressure is linked to having an unhealthy, high-sodium diet, coupled with lack of exercise.

Make sure you’re getting the proper amount of all foods, including carbohydrates, by consulting with your doctor or dietician.

4: Try To Eat More Fiber

Most people don’t have enough fiber in their diet, which also leads to heart problems.

This is all the more reason to follow the recommendations your doctor gives when it comes to your diet and exercise. You can supplement more fiber with certain foods, or by taking vitamin supplements.

5: Learn About Your Heart

You won’t know how to take care of your heart unless you learn.

Finding good information from professionals, like the blogs on Dr. Allen Amorn website, can give you a wealth of information.

Knowledge and understanding go a long way when planning how to optimize your heart health.

6: Get Enough Sleep

No matter how healthy you eat, or often you exercise, you can still be at risk of heart problems if you don’t eat enough rest.

There are lots of other mental and psychical health factors related to sleep. So make sure you’re getting at least 7 to 8 hours most nights of the week.

7: Cut out unnecessary stress

Stress is also a major factor of the strains put on your heart, as well as your mental health.

Not all stress is avoidable, but if you can, cut out the unnecessary stuff.

Toxic friends, overwhelming schedules, and bad relationships can all create unwanted stress. When you figure out what you really want and need out of life, it’s easier to ditch the bad stuff. *Here’s a few ways Mom can destress without drinking!*

8: Meditate or Pray

When talking about stress, one has to remember the power of meditation and prayer.

It doesn’t matter which you gravitate towards more. But the simple act of relaxing with your thoughts and focusing your energy on things other than stress can greatly help your mind and heart.

9: Practice Self-Care

Like exercise, most parents don’t have many opportunities to practice their own self-care.

But finding the time to focus on something fulfilling that you enjoy, that enriches your life, can do wonders for you both mentally and psychically.

Do your heart some good, and read that book you want to begin, or take that hike you’ve longed for. It will benefit you in so many ways!

10: Don’t Sit Still Too Long!

We’ve mentioned exercise and self-care, but one thing many people that work in office environments forget? How bad it is to sit for too long!

Even if you’re avid about activity, it doesn’t take long for blood-clots to build up in your legs if you work sitting down.

Take frequent breaks away from the desk to stand, stretch, and walk. Parking farthest away from the office helps as well; you’ll get extra exercise walking, and help eliminate the risks of blood-clots developing after sitting for hours.
