It’s The Little Things

Just like how you keep your marriage happy and healthy by your small, everyday actions, the same goes for saving your dollars and cents.

When you walk out of the bathroom, be sure to flip that light switch. When you’re done with your coffee maker or toaster, unplug them.

Instead of buying flats of bottled waters, invest in reusable water bottles. The amount you save from making these small decisions will definitely prove to add up!

Limit Eating Out

Let’s do some quick math. Say each time you eat out, it costs $8-$12 per person.

If you and your spouse eat out together once a week, that’s $16-$24. Multiply that by four weeks, that’s $64-$96 per month, and that’s only if you two eat out together once a week. You grab a quick breakfast on your way to work or forget to pack your lunch and the amount can start to skyrocket.

Set a goal together to eliminate eating out for a period of time, or set a monthly budget for fast food and eating out and stick to it.

Conscientious Grocery Shopping On A Budget

You probably find yourself budgeting quite a bit for your groceries. Try taking a step back and think about how you might be able to save.

Consider what ingredients and meals you make most often, and purchase those items in bulk. When those grocery store ads come in the mail, take a look to see if there are any sales you should be taking advantage of with items to stock up on.

Make a meal plan based off of what you already have in the house, and then purchase things at the store to compliment that meal plan.

Be sure to print off some coupons before you go! This is an area where you have the potential for some major savings.

Budget-Friendly Celebration

Just because so-and-so went to the Bahamas to celebrate their anniversary, that doesn’t mean that you need to have an elaborate, exotic excursion for yours.

Sit down with your spouse to talk about some fun, frugal options for making the day special. A nice dinner downtown or an evening at a bed and breakfast nearby for a little staycation are wonderful ways to commemorate the occasion.

The amount of money spent on the celebration does not determine its level of success, so take a look at your options with a little research, and find something that you’ll both enjoy that will fit your budget!

Conclusion

We know that budgeting and saving can be intimidating at times. Do your best to keep the end in mind and start small. You don’t have to save it all right away, and you don’t have to save thousands to make your anniversary memorable.

Start where you are, make feasible goals, and work together to make it happen. Happy saving!

  1. Love these tips! I wish I had these when I first got married. Eating out takes such a HUGE chunk of your budget. I remember the first time I looked at my bank statement and added up the cost of all the times we ate dinner out that month and I almost fell off my chair! Thank you for sharing these helpful tips for saving money!

  2. These are some really good ideas. I once read that the key to a long marriage is one big trip or vacation every two years. So far my husband and I have stuck to that. We normally splurge on a fancy dinner on our anniversary but every other year we go all out and make a trip to Disney. I don’t think it’s necessary to always take an expensive trip every year. There are plenty of small trips that you can go on through the year that are inexpensive and can help save money.

  3. Love these tips! We treated ourselves to a nice vacation for our first anniversary and we couldn’t have done it without cutting unnecessary expenses and saving as much as possible.

  4. These are good points.I feel like when we first got married, we enjoyed eating out a lot and splurging on things. While we weren’t very wasteful, we definitely could have saved more.

  5. Great tips! I especially like the one re not trying “keep up with the Joneses” and skipping a lavish anniversary trip. It makes me sad how social media has played into that “race” so much and to think of how much debt people have accrued because of it.

  6. Great tips. Works for so many occasions. If you identify what is most important to you to spend money on, you can then “trim the fat” in other areas that don’t contribute to your overall goal.

  7. I love this, and it fits me so well. I’d much rather have a memorable honeymoon or anniversary than an over the top wedding.

  8. We are still paying off our wedding – 5 years later 🙈 It was worth it though. Love this post – some really practical ideas!

  9. These tips are so helpful. I’m definitely going to limit our eating out budget down. Cause, it’s ridiculous. These tips could also be used for saving money in general. Thanks for sharing!

  10. By our first anniversary we already had a kiddo. It would have been nice to get out of town and do a better celebration but we’ll work for the 5th or 10th anniversary.
