Why You Need To Declutter Your Makeup Regularly

Why You Need To Declutter Your Makeup Regularly…

Everyone has a spring (or sometimes, winter) cleaning schedule. While we work on the basics – like closets, basements, and other areas of clutter, one is forgotten. That’s your makeup! And every makeup loving Mama needs to declutter!

Why is keeping makeup organized so important?

The most obvious reason, is the health of your skin! Clogged pores, acne, blackheads – all can be caused by your makeup!

The most common reason why these issues are caused by your makeup, is because it’s either out of date or dusty.

And let’s not forget another important factor! If you can’t remember how many pink lipsticks you have, then you’re probably buying more than you need. A well organized makeup case can also save you some money!

How Can You Tell If Makeup Is Too Old?

If it’s an opened product, go by the shelf-life symbol on the back. This symbol looks like a little open jar, and will have a number on it. Most products have a shelf life of 6-24 months.

If it’s an unopened product, the life span is pretty much the same. Although, you can extend the life of that unopened Sephora Blush* just a tad, by storing it in a cool, dark place.

But beware – any makeup, opened or unopened, that has separation, color changes, or a weird smell, needs to be trashed asap!

And, while we are on the topic – any makeup that’s missing a lid, or the container is broken in any way? Toss it! The last thing you really need is dust and dirt (in other words, BACTERIA!!!) getting into the product you’re putting on your face…or eyes..or lips!

When Is The Best Time To Declutter Your Makeup?

If you haven’t done so in a long time, it’s best to start with a clean palette. No pun intended!

Sit down and examine each beauty product. Look for discoloration, broken seals, and smells. Then, check that shelf life. If you know for a fact it’s expired since the time you bought it, then that makeup should go. If you can’t remember when you first bought it – trash it!

I keep a routine of checking my makeup every 3 months. If you’re super organized, keep a small notebook of your beauty product purchases, complete with dates. This is actually ideal, as then you only need to check your records to know when you should declutter your makeup.

Ok, I culled my makeup. What’s the best way to organize the rest?

Most Moms have that one makeup train, or at the moment for me – a giant plastic bin, of ALL their beauty products. Once you’ve gone through everything, it’s time to invest in a real organization system!

Above are a few of my favorite organizers, but even if you invest in a big cosmetics train case – the point is to be organized!

As long as everything can be seen and easily found, you’re doing good! The point is to know exactly what products you have, and that you don’t forget to use any.

Because look at it this way – you spent money on a Urban Decay Naked* Palette, and only used it twice before it’s time to declutter your makeup again. You’re literally throwing away money because you didn’t get the most out of the product before it expired!

Conclusion

If you want healthier skin, and a fatter wallet (no matter how much of a beauty addict you are) – you have to declutter your makeup! Even if you have a minimalist makeup collection, or you’re a big time beauty lover.

I’m not saying if you want a hundred shades of pink lipstick, you can’t have it. But if you want to get the most out of your money, and make sure you’re not buying 4 sticks of the same brand because you keep forgetting you have it, you need to clean out your beauty products!

And even if you did spend way too much – it’s not worth the zits to use 3 year old blush.

Trust me, your skin will thank me!
