What to do if you are in an accident…

Should the worst-case scenario happen, here are some important things to remember…

  • Take pictures of the damage if you can. You’ll need these for insurance claims. Don’t forget copies of police reports.
  • Get the names, license numbers, and insurance information of everyone involved in the accident.
  • If you are injured, don’t be afraid to seek legal representation (especially if the accident wasn’t your fault). A  car accident lawyer will specialize in these types of cases and know how best to represent you.

Best Winter Driving Tips

Winterizing Your Car

If you live in areas that get snow, this is vital not just for safety, but the proper maintenance of your car.

  • Car battery power drops as temperatures outside drop. Always do regular checks on battery performance.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half-full to avoid freezing.
  • Replace worn-down wiper blades, tires, and brakes.

Before You Drive…

  • Make sure all side mirrors and cameras are clean and free of ice.
  • Ensure your windshield is clear of any ice, or dirt debris.
  • Warm your car before driving but never start your car inside an enclosed garage without the garage door open!
  • If possible, avoid driving in bad weather. If you can wait for snow or rain storms to pass, you will avoid the elements and stand a better chance on the roads. Check for road closures and ice warnings as well.

Driving Tips

If you do venture out into the snow or ice, keep these tips in mind.

  • Don’t use cruise control in snowy, or icy conditions.
  • If you start skidding, steer into the direction your car is going. You have a better chance of your tires regaining traction. You also won’t need to over-correct as much.
  • Don’t slam on your brakes! You want to pump the brakes if you feel as if you aren’t in control, or need to stop without sliding.
  • Take it slow when you accelerate or decelerate. No sudden movements.
  • When driving uphill, don’t slow down or stop. You’ll lose momentum and may slide backward, losing control.

Stuck in the snow?

Keep a bag of kitty litter in your trunk. Not only will this give you more weight in the back of the car. You can use the litter for traction against the snow. It’s also important to keep a small shovel in the truck to help dig yourself out of a tight spot. Keep an emergency first-aid kit on hand equipped with hand and foot warmers in case you’re out for a while. It’s also wise to have a bag of extra hats, gloves, long pants, and jackets if you need to bundle up.

  1. I barely have to drive in the snow so I normally don’t think of tips like these, but they are good to know for when I do drive in the snow! It can be a bit scary to do.

  2. Such GOOD tips! I hate driving in winter weather conditions, but sometimes it’s just necessary. Follow these tips – they’re spot on!

  3. These are all great tips. Keeping the wipers in good condition and making sure your windshield is clear are so important. I love those handwarmers. I’m always cold anyway. So, I buy a larger pack of them for the winter. And, throw a few in the car.
