How to Simplify Your Mom Life for Better Productivity

Ask any mother today and they’ll tell you that motherhood is complicated. Many moms manage family obligations, work responsibilities, and personal goals (often together) on a daily basis. And this insane to-do list makes even the most productive of women bend or break.

What results is a lot of worry, trouble focusing, and a complete lack of being present in the moment. Sound familiar?

But what if we could change that? Is it possible for a modern mother to slow down enough to smell the roses? Or at least leave the overwhelm in the dust?

And where do we start?

Why Simplifying Can Change Everything

With decisions.

As moms, we make a thousand decisions a day. What will Billy eat for breakfast? Should I tie Sofie’s shoes? Can I feed myself, work, and help with homework all at the same time?

By the time our true day even starts, we’re exhausted. By 5 pm. It’s mental overload.

The solution:

Simplify. Cut down on those decisions, tasks, and physical objects that weigh you down.

After decluttering your mom life, you’ll have the space to pause and enjoy what life is really about.

11 Ways to Simplify Your Mom Life

  1. Delegate

First and foremost, remove as many tasks as you can from your endless to-lists. First, give your kids more chores (they build character). Plus, make sure your partner is doing their part around the house.

And be sure that your family understands that you are a TEAM, not a one-man show.

Next, don’t forget outside help! Who else could help remove a task? Consider hiring a house cleaner or getting a regular babysitter if it works for you.

  1. Automate

Many of the small mundane responsibilities we have can be automated in order to completely eliminate them from our orbits.

So, systemize regular bills. Next, make a theme for your weekly meals such as “Taco Tuesday” to make dinner decisions easier. Also, try the subscribe and save option at Amazon when you can to automatically have products that you use often delivered to your house.

Make a list of the regular re-occurring tasks that you do at home and work. Can any of these be systemized for an easier living?

  1. Make Fewer Decisions

The key to a clearer mind is cutting our decisions down to what’s most important. Eliminate the inconsequential and you’ll free up space for enjoying simple pleasures with your kids, as well as thriving in work that brings you to life.

Here are a few examples:

  • Plan ahead your outfits for the week when you do laundry
  • Prep kids’ school lunches ahead
  • Make freezer meals for future easy dinners (double what you’re already making!)
  • Prep ahead breakfasts for a few days or a week
  • Do laundry all on one day, to eliminate small loads during the week

  1. Know What to Ignore

As moms, we often feel guilty about what we’re not doing. Sure, we busted our bums to feed them a healthy lunch but maybe we forgot the right containers. So, we beat ourselves up about it.

It’s time to take a step back. There are NO perfect moms.

So, do your best, and let the rest go. If you won’t remember it in five years, it’s not worth your time of day now.

  1. Limit Social Media & Negative Influences

Sometimes, our lives feel complicated because we’re spending time online comparing ourselves to other moms that seem to have it all together.

Spoiler alert: no one has it together all of the time. We only see the snapshots that make it look that way.

So, unfriend those that make you feel smaller even if that isn’t their intention. Then, limit your time on social media and online places that can make you feel overwhelmed or that don’t truly make your life better.

  1. Start a Morning Routine

Want to feel more productive? Healthier? Happier?

A morning routine can simplify and automate the actions that you want to do to make your mom life the best it can be. It gives direct structure to what you need to thrive on a daily basis.

  1. Shop Online

Next, simplifying your shopping online can save you HOURS every week. Instead of shopping in the store, consider grocery pick up or delivery.

Often when you order, the store keeps your grocery list for next time – saving you even MORE time when you re-order the same items again.

  1. Time Block to Simplify

Frankly, I doubt moms would survive without multitasking. However, research shows that we are far more productive when we can give our attention solely to one thing.

Therefore, find times in your day to simplify your focus. Maybe that’s getting up an hour before your family to concentrate fully on your self-care. Or perhaps you schedule a time block on the weekend for that work project you’re passionate about.

You’ll soon realize that you’re far more productive and less overwhelmed even though it takes less time.

  1. Take Care of Yourself

Lack of personal care is a huge reason that moms feel overwhelmed.

We ALL need time to center ourselves to better handle the day’s obstacles. Whether they are work emergencies or crying babies.

So, plan simple quiet time every day (without technology) that you can be alone with yourself to think, sit, and re-charge. There are a variety of ways stay-at-home moms and working moms can improve their mental health.

  1. Declutter Your Kid Stuff

If you had told me how much stuff a person acquires once they have kids I would have laughed at you.

But mom after mom confesses that they’re drowning in toys and clothes, just from their children.

Excess stuff is a massive burden on our mental health and productivity. So, take a few minutes (or a weekend) to pare down your children’s belongings. Often, kids use much less than what they have anyways.

  1. Invest in Healthy Convenience

I’m terrified to find out how much time I spend preparing food for my family. It’s A LOT.

So, occasionally, invest in things that make this part of motherhood more convenient. Buy a pre-made salad, rotisserie chicken, or already chopped veggies if it helps your family eat healthy. Next, consider a Blue Apron membership or a co-op that delivers food to you.

What can you do or buy to make healthy food easy with less work on your part?

Yes money is important. But so is time. So, find your balance.

Something to Consider

Ask any grandmother today and they’ll tell you that motherhood has only gotten more complicated. And comes with more baggage than ever.

So, work to let go of the physical and mental burdens that keep you from living the motherhood and personal life of your dreams.

But please, start today. Those precious children grow up fast.
