This is a sponsored review, all thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.

Halloween is a time we can all curl up and read scary stories – or anything with a spooky feel!

Touted as “The Best Halloween Story Since The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,(Laura T)” I was pretty excited to be able to read this book. I haven’t been able to find time to read much, and was definitely in the mood to read something interesting and festive!

Step Back In Time…

Our story takes place in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1905. There is no delay in a quick establishment of the time and place that this story is set, and I think it really adds to the mood and feel of the book.

The author is very descriptive, without the story becoming boring. It’s pretty easy to imagine yourself in the scene as the tale plays out. For a historical piece, The Legend of Mr. Ween is very accurate, without losing its relatability with modern times.

Hal is a very likable character to relate to, and it doesn’t take long to become interested, and engaged, with his character development of an intriguing young man finding himself in a new city.

Perfect Halloween Vibes…

This story is full of mystery right off the bat. Who is Hal? What’s his story?

An even bigger mystery, (without spoilers!) what is this strange elixir that everyone in Boston is enamored with…causing so much chaos?

The story moves swiftly but doesn’t leave the reader feeling lost, or confused. The Legend of Mr. Ween is very exciting!

The in-depth and vibrant descriptions of characters, scenery, and expressions are well-written, and keep you glued to the story. it’s really one that you will want to sit down and read in one sitting, and not put down!

This kind of story writing makes The Legend of Mr. Ween perfect for the Halloween season; excitement, adventure, mystery, even horror.

But don’t worry, for older readers, it’s not too scary to enjoy before bedtime!

Psst! Here’s some really important things you need to remember about Halloween

The Legend of Mr. Ween is ideal for families!

While the story does have some violent, scary, and somewhat adult themes, I still think it’s great for families to read together.

The age range I would put at 13+ if a child were to read on their own, just because of the nature of the book itself. If you want to read to your kids, this story does open up topics for discussion. Which, can be used as a learning experience.

The vocabulary choices make this a great story to elaborate on when reading aloud, and it’s an interesting enough story to keep even the young ones entertained until the end!

While the language used is extremely tame by today’s standards, if you feel you need to, you can easily omit certain words from the story, and not take anything away from the book itself. Just in case you wanted to censor some scary themes, or words, from your little one’s ears.

In all, I love how unique and original the book is. I definitely think it’s probably one of the best Halloween themed short stories I’ve read in a long time, and I do enjoy it better than the typical tales we know of for this time of year.

  1. This sounds like a fun book and your review of it is helpful.I have omitted words in books when my kids were little so I am familiar with doing that when necessary.

  2. Sounds like a good one for the season! Like the idea of reading it to the kids and using it as a learning (vocab) lesson!
