How to Effectively Combat Winter Allergies

For seasonal allergy sufferers, winter time is not necessarily a break.

There’s many ways to fight off the lesser known causes of allergies this time of year.

Here’s a few tips to keep allergies at bay during the winter months.

Boost Your Vitamin Intake!

It never hurts to take vitamins, as they help to decrease the amount of time you are sick, if this happens.

Most people don’t get enough Vitamin D in the winter months, as exposure to sunlight decreases. Vitamin D can be found in a host of foods, like fish, eggs, and dairy products.

Vitamin C can be found in leafy greens, bell peppers, and of course, citrus fruits.

Whether you change your eating habits for the winter season, or take more vitamin supplement, keep this in mind – deficiency cannot be fixed by simply eating foods with vitamins.

To diagnosis and treat vitamin deficiency, you’ll need to see a Doctor.

Also, seeing an allergist can help you pinpoint allergy problems…

A doctor who specializes in allergies, like Dr. Summit Shah, can help you pinpoint the causes of your winter allergies.

Once the allergen itself is identified, you can more easily prevent flares up in your allergies!

Clean Before Spring!

We have all heard of spring cleaning – but what about “before spring”  cleaning?

Naturally, you’re going to be cooped up indoors more frequently in the winter months.

Dust, pet dander, and even mold can wreck havoc on winter allergies. It’s important to tidy up areas that collect these germs before you get sick.

Replacing shower curtains, and anything with the slightest bit of mold will cut down on your allergy problems. Replacing air filters and using dehumidifiers can help clean the air inside your home as well.

Try to keep bedding as clean as possible!

This is probably the hardest for pet lovers and their animals to adhere to.

Some people are mildly, to highly allergic, to pet dander. These allergies increase in the winter months, when most people to confined to the indoors more often on average.

As every pet owner can tell you, it’s sometimes difficult to keep your cat (or dog) out of your bed on a cold winter night.

Of, if you’re like me, you enjoy sharing your bed with a snuggly kitty when it’s chilly out! So it’s not really a battle worth fighting.

However, pet dander is a major cause of allergies for a lot of people. When you’re already confined to the warmth’s of home, you really need to be diligent about keeping your bedding clean to prevent winter allergies.

Try to keep your pets out of your bedroom, or at least off your actual bed. If they have their own pet bed, it helps to wash it at least once a week, to keep pet dander down .

You should also washing your personal bedding at least once a week in hot water. Hot water should be at 130 degrees Fahrenheit ( or approx. 55 degrees Celsius) to get the cleanest bedding possible.

It also helps to wash your pet at least once a week to keep dander at bay – especially if you just can’t ban them from the bedroom.

Hopefully these tips can help you keep the winter allergies, and blues, away!

  1. I’ve been really struggling with my allergies this year – it’s been the worst! I just bought a big bottle of vitamin D so hopefully that’ll help me out!

  2. We suffer on allergies this year like last year. But we have taken a lot of herbs instead of the medicine we get from the store. I don’t like dealing with allergies.

  3. Allergies are so bad for everyone! My husband has a hard time with them and we just recently got air purifiers for our daughters rooms and its helped a ton.
