Why Do We Take Selfies? Are They Good, Or Bad?

Why Do We Take Selfies?

With the rise of technology and the ease to use the internet, social media has expanded dramatically over the last three decades. With that rise, there has been a greater interest in building followings, becoming influencers online, or just simply sharing yourself and your family with loved ones. Selfies are a pretty big byproduct of these changes.

Selfie Mania

Selfies have had a lot of different studies around them. Are selfies good? Are they bad? Do they boost self-confidence and self-esteem? Do they cause narcissism? And all of this ties to the use of social media. Is it good? Does it create relationships? Can it destroy relationships? Does it cause people to not know how to interact in real life? Does it cause a loss of filter? I’m sure the answer to all of these questions can be YES as well as NO. Like most things it depends, right? It depends on the person, it depends on the situation, it depends on the use, or abuse.

When Do Selfies Become A Problem?

So how do selfies help boost self-esteem and when does it become too much? Self-esteem is a person’s overall evaluation of their own self-worth. Taking a picture of yourself, being confident in it and sharing it online helps you be positive about your looks. In addition, that confidence is expanded as people comment, compliment and like your selfie.

When does it become an addiction? You may have an addiction to taking and posting selfies when it becomes a compulsion, you have to do it and it may very well interfere with your everyday life.

There is one other aspect of selfies that has an impact on self-esteem. Research has been done not only looking at posting selfies but looking at selfies. This research has come to the conclusion that looking at other people’s selfies can actually lower your self-esteem. Why? Looking at other people’s selfies can cause comparisons and those comparisons can make you feel less capable or less successful.

Everyone Takes Them!

You do not have to be someone trying to make an income online for this to be something to concern yourself with. Moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, looking to share their family with friends, professionals, or teenagers posting on social media. Anyone and everyone on social media have either taken selfies or have seen lots of other people’s selfies. I, myself, have been known to take a selfie or two, usually when I’m travelling.

Given this information I feel the one thing to take from this is moderation. Like most things is important when it comes to social media and selfies to limit yourself. Remember that you should not compare yourself to others and that you’re beautiful, handsome, strong, confident, and successful despite selfies and social media.

What is an aspect you like about selfies? What is an aspect you dislike about selfies? How does social media impact your life?
