How You Can Help Someone Struggling From Heroin Addiction

Do you know someone addicted to heroin?

Nearly every day, I see somewhere in a Yahoo News headline, my Facebook feed, or on tv – another Parent has lost their life to drug abuse. Specifically, to heroin abuse, which has been increasing.

On The Rise…

All drugs are terrible, but I’ve noticed a spike in reports of people overdosing on heroin. Maybe it’s the trend of the media, but that doesn’t make the news any easier to see or read about.  In an effort to try to bring awareness, some people have recently went viral, filming themselves telling children of a parent’s passing, in hopes it will encourage a heroin addicted person to seek help. Even police departments have begun doing this, posting pictures online to educate and warn people of the dangers of heroin abuse.

It is truly heartbreaking to see these stories of someone’s friend, parent, and even child-lose their life to drug addiction. And I can’t imagine losing someone I know to it. But I could have. I had a very dear friend and coworker, succumb to substance abuse, and it was tough-but with the support of his family and friends, we helped him get through it. But it might not have turned out that way, if he didn’t seek treatment. And I don’t want to think of the alternative. But that terrible alternative, is reality for a lot of people. And it needs to start changing.

How to help

Maybe you know someone who is suffering from substance abuse. There are ways you can help guide them to treatment. Always remember that it’s a worthy cause – no matter how tough it becomes. Treatment for heroin addiction is attainable, no matter who is suffering.

The best way to help someone, is by guiding them to professional help.

  1. I agree. That is heartbreaking, I can’t imagine having to tell someone they have lost their loved one.The only way to help them is professional help for sure!

  2. My brother lost his best friend to heroin last year. He was a super nice, hard working guy. He had turned to heroin when he could no longer get refills for his pain medication. The addicts aren’t always who people think. I think that’s the scariest part about this epidemic.
